Why Sheffield Wednesday have handed honorary roles to well-known trio including Howard Wilkinson

Sheffield Wednesday saw three well-known figures handed honorary roles over the weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday’s owners have affirmed their commitment to acknowledging the club’s history by making legendary figure Howard Wilkinson a lifetime president - along with two politicians who played a part in its recent rescue mission.

Had things played out differently, it’s conceivable that the Owls could have gone into extinction but for the hard background work of a number of people including Clive Betts and Lord David Blunkett, two lifelong Wednesdayites who are well-known political figures.

The three men were unveiled to their roles on Saturday in front of the crowd gathered to watch Wednesday’s goalless draw with Stockport County and were joined among others by co-owner Michael Storch and CEO David Bruce. Chairman David Storch was unable to make the trip over from the States as he awaits back surgery.

The positions are not designed to bring the three figures into the day-to-day running of the club but sees their contributions and standing within the club and the wider Sheffield community - and seeks to formalise a process in which club leaders can lean on their guidance and expertise.

A club statement read in part: ‘The honorary positions recognise three individuals with longstanding connections to Wednesday and the City of Sheffield, and significant contributions they have made to the club, its community and wider civic life.’ The statement concluded that the trio ‘will act as ambassadors for Sheffield Wednesday, providing experience, counsel and continuity as the club enters the next chapter of its history.’

Alongside his position as lifetime president, Betts will become the club’s dedicated Fan Advocate, which is said to provide a ‘direct supporter perspective and advice to ownership and the board of directors.’ Confirmation around the further workings of a Fan Advisory Board are expected in due course.

Chairman Storch said in a statement: “These appointments represent our deepening commitment to respecting and celebrating our history and heritage, while ensuring these three esteemed individuals continue to be major forces as we shape the future of Wednesday. Each has a deep connection to the club and brings different experiences and perspectives, but they share a genuine love for Wednesday and a desire to see it succeed.

"We are proud to have them representing Sheffield Wednesday and look forward to drawing on their experience and counsel in the years ahead.”
