Exclusive:Sheffield Wednesday talks to take place over fresh terms for striker

There is plenty to be getting on with at Sheffield Wednesday.

Incoming Sheffield Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson has a bursting in-tray to contend with as he begins life in his vital and exciting new role. The former Stockport County man is expected to be announced sometime ahead of the opening of the transfer window on June 15 and is no doubt set for a busy summer of club rebuild.

The small matter of a vast squad rebuild is at the heart of the jobs list, with a few contract situations to handle early doors. Several players are believed to have been the subject of outline discussions with the club in the last weeks, ranging from bona fide senior figures to some of the club’s youngsters.

One of the players set for discussion over the coming weeks, The Star understands, is forward George Brown. The 20-year-old attacker grabbed two goals in his maiden campaign in senior football last time out before his efforts were curtailed by injury. He made nine first team appearances across the course of the campaign, with seven of those arriving in the Championship.

Wednesday chose to trigger a year’s extension option on Brown’s contract, as confirmed by the club’s retained list released last month. Despite his injury, which it is understood has required surgery, The Star understands the Owls have signalled they are open to discussing an improved deal for the starlet, who signed on officially in 2025 on youth terms. The Yorkshire-born striker is likely to miss the start of the club’s pre-season programme as all parties look to navigate a full and successful rehabilitation.

Where those talks come in the priority list of things is unknown as things stand, with a great deal of work to undertake in preparation for the coming campaign. Talks with Will Grainger - reportedly fancied by Everton among others - are believed to be going as hoped while further talks will take place with senior men Svante Ingelsson, Max Lowe and Liam Cooper. Ingelsson is under contract next season but is of interest to the likes of Stoke City, the latter pair are out of contract at the end of the month.
