Sheffield Wednesday striker hit with fresh injury blow - will miss rest of season

Sheffield Wednesday striker George Brown will be out for the remainder of the campaign with injury.

Sheffield Wednesday youngster George Brown has sustained a setback in his rehabilitation from injury and will ‘certainly’ miss the remainder of their league campaign, the club have confirmed.

The rookie forward burst onto the scene early on in the campaign, scoring in his full league debut at Portsmouth in September - a match that remains the Owls’ solitary win of a long and battling season. He has played nine matches in a breakthrough campaign, also scoring in a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City.

Brown had been on the comeback trail from a long-term issue and had featured in the last two outings for Wednesday’s under-21 side. It had been hoped that he would be able to jump back into contention in the coming weeks, before the season finale at home to West Brom on May 2.

Speaking in the last week, the Owls boss spoke glowingly of his hopes that Brown would be able to feature at some stage and that he had been performing well in training. Brown is seen as a bright prospect and the club are expected to enact a year’s extension clause on his contract that will take him into next season as a Wednesday player.

“It’s so sad for George that he has this injury,” Pedersen told club media. “He has worked so hard to come back and it’s so frustrating for him. He will be out for the last four games. We are waiting for the exact prognosis. It doesn’t matter how long, we will be there to help and support him. George is a top human and a top talent and we will do everything we can to help him.”

The situation at Wednesday this season has left players vulnerable to injury. A threadbare squad has left individuals playing beyond the advice of the club’s medical department in stages and earlier in the campaign Pedersen spoke openly about the measures being taken to protect young players against injury - many of whom had not been exposed to the physical intensity and demands of senior training and match action.
