The prospect of Sheffield Wednesday rushing out to sign any squad-bolstering free agents doesn’t appear to be a live one as things stand - but the options are out there should they be required.
The Owls sealed-off their manic summer with the loan addition of Wrexham attacker Davis Keillor-Dunn, a proven goal-getter at League One level that made his debut for the club in the 2-1 win at Peterborough United over the weekend. The publication of their EFL squad list showed five places open - meaning in theory free agents could be signed to bolster their numbers.
Henrik Pedersen and sporting director Simon Wilson played down the idea of any further additions in the immediate future, though Wilson did outline the ongoing efforts of the recruitment team in keeping tabs on any options that could align for the Owls’ needs going forward.
He said: “Should there be a situation where we have to, we have to know who those players are, where they are and be across their situation. So, yeah, Kevin (Beadell) and the recruitment team are constantly around that and understanding what options we might have should we need them.”
With that in mind, we asked Owls fan and sometime EFL club analyst TWFootball to run the rule over the remaining options in the window. Including a former England international, Man City and Arsenal academy graduates and one or two names you may recognise, here’s what he came up with.

13. Ashton Muir
The former Manchester City winger is available after leaving the club this summer. Muir spent the majority of his development at City and was a regular for the Elite Development Squad during 2025/26, recording four goals and four assists in Premier League 2. The right-footed 20-year-old is comfortable on either flank and can also operate in an attacking-midfield role. City highlighted his work rate and physical development after returning from a lengthy injury, while his performances helped the U21s win the Premier League 2 title. 14. Elliot Lee
Available after a mutual termination at Wrexham, Lee has already been linked with a move to S6. The 31-year-old attacking midfielder spent last season on loan at Doncaster and was a key figure in Wrexham’s rise through the divisions. 15. Sebastian Ferdinand
The Arsenal academy forward is available after leaving the Gunners this summer. Ferdinand, 20, primarily operates as a right winger but can also play on the left and has been listed as capable of filling in at right-back. He made his senior exposure through Arsenal's EFL Trophy campaign, featuring against Leyton Orient, Newcastle United and Exeter City, while also scoring regularly at Premier League 2 level. With very little first-team football behind him, Ferdinand would be a longer-term gamble rather than an immediate starter, but his age, academy pedigree and positional versatility make him the type of low-cost signing Wednesday could develop | Getty Images

16. Joe Aribo
The Nigeria international midfielder was released by Southampton this summer after a brief loan at Leicester. Aribo previously won the Scottish title with Rangers and made 95 league appearances for the Saints. Comfortable in central or attacking midfield, the 30-year-old brings physicality, technical quality and Championship experience that would strengthen the midfield. | Getty Images
