The prospect of Sheffield Wednesday rushing out to sign any squad-bolstering free agents doesn’t appear to be a live one as things stand - but the options are out there should they be required.
The Owls sealed-off their manic summer with the loan addition of Wrexham attacker Davis Keillor-Dunn, a proven goal-getter at League One level that made his debut for the club in the 2-1 win at Peterborough United over the weekend. The publication of their EFL squad list showed five places open - meaning in theory free agents could be signed to bolster their numbers.
Henrik Pedersen and sporting director Simon Wilson played down the idea of any further additions in the immediate future, though Wilson did outline the ongoing efforts of the recruitment team in keeping tabs on any options that could align for the Owls’ needs going forward.
He said: “Should there be a situation where we have to, we have to know who those players are, where they are and be across their situation. So, yeah, Kevin (Beadell) and the recruitment team are constantly around that and understanding what options we might have should we need them.”
With that in mind, we asked Owls fan and sometime EFL club analyst TWFootball to run the rule over the remaining options in the window. Including a former England international, Man City and Arsenal academy graduates and one or two names you may recognise, here’s what he came up with.

9. Adam Webster
Released by Brighton this summer after missing the entire 2025/26 season with an ACL injury, Webster is now a free agent. The 31-year-old made 158 appearances for the Seagulls after a then club-record move from Bristol City, with earlier spells at Portsmouth and Ipswich. A composed, ball-playing centre-back with Premier League experience, he would bring leadership and quality if fully fit. Sheffield United recently parked their interest. | Getty Images

10. Sunusi Ibrahim
The Nigerian forward is a free agent after CF Montréal mutually terminated his contract in July following a back injury that limited him last season. Ibrahim scored regularly in Nigeria before five years in MLS, where he made 92 appearances. A compact, mobile striker or wide forward at 23, he could provide attacking depth and pace if he stays fit. | Getty Images

11. Solly March
Released by Brighton after 13 years and more than 260 appearances, March is now available. Recurring knee problems restricted him to a handful of substitute appearances last season. The 32-year-old left-footed winger or wing-back still offers Premier League quality and versatility on either flank if he can recapture fitness and form. 12. Esapa Osong
The former Nottingham Forest academy striker is available after being released this summer. Osong had loans at Rotherham, Cambridge United, Motherwell and Fleetwood Town, scoring in League Two last season. A 21-year-old forward with pace and physical presence, he would be a developmental option who already has senior EFL minutes. | Getty Images
