Sheffield Wednesday facing cruel blow as sparkling talent Ernie Weaver heads to see a specialist after injury
Ernie Weaver has been a revelation since breaking into Sheffield Wednesday’s first team, but now faces a spell on the sidelines.
The 19-year-old had a brilliant start to the 2025/26 season as he went from signing his first professional contract to making his first team debut to starting in the Championship in the space of a few months, and he’s earned lots of plaudits for his performances along the way.

Now, though, it’s understood that the talented teen looks likely to miss a lot of football after an injury was discovered that may require surgery, with The Star understanding that the centre back has seen a specialist this week before a decision was made on the definitive next steps.
As first reported by Radio Sheffield, Weaver could face ‘months’ out as he recovers from this setback, and it comes as a huge blow to manager, Henrik Pedersen, who is already working with a threadbare squad at Hillsborough. On top of that, it’s a cruel twist of fate for the player himself as he was starting to make a real name for himself in the senior game.

The concern is that Weaver may be out until around April due to a foot injury that has not properly been dealt with, with suggestions being that he’s been playing with a fracture for a number of weeks. His absence, especially with the lack of ability to make new signings, will be a difficult thing for all parties to deal with.
Wednesday are back in action in a couple of weeks after the international break, and Pedersen will be left with a fresh selection concern as he works out who is best to take Weaver’s spot in the XI against Charlton Athletic.
