Sheffield Wednesday defender wins award

Liam Palmer has been at The Owls since he was seven

Long-serving Sheffield Wednesday defender Liam Palmer has won an award.

The 34-year-old, who has made more than 500 appearances for the club, has been named the PFA Community Champion for the 2025/2026 season.

The accolade has been handed out in recognition of his ‘outstanding dedication to charitable causes and community initiatives away from the pitch.’ It was also given for his ‘continued support’ for a number of projects delivered across South Yorkshire by the Owls' charitable arm, Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme.

The Owls said Palmer had consistently given his time to support people, attend community events and champion the work of the community programme, ‘making a lasting impact across our communities.’

Marcus Brameld, head of community at SWFCCP, said: “Liam has been a fantastic supporter of everyone here at the community programme. He is always willing to give his time to support our projects and the people involved in them, and his commitment on and off the pitch has been outstanding.

“He is a brilliant role model for our participants and a true ambassador for Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. We are delighted to recognise him as our PFA Community Champion for the 2025/26 season.”

Palmer, who has been at Wednesday since the age of seven, will be hoping to add to his remarkable appearance record next season. The versatile defender is in discussions with the club about extending his stay as The Owls aim to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt when the new season gets underway in August.
