EFL figure suggests 'almost guaranteed' Sheffield Wednesday fate under Dave Challinor
Sheffield Wednesday are under new management - sparking conversation on what can be achieved this season.
A former EFL figure with three promotions on his CV has predicted a successful rest of the season for Sheffield Wednesday following the hiring of new boss Dave Challinor.
The Owls will kick off their new start with an FA Cup first round tie at Oldham Athletic on Sunday, with high hopes steps can be taken over the coming weeks to move things towards more consistent performances and a more tangible identity in their play. The return of key players from injury will be important in that mission.
Former Wrexham captain Ben Tozer, who retired last year and has since moved into punditry, believes the Wednesday squad is one that can challenge in the upper reaches of the table after the early momentum of the season slowed to leave them in ninth place in what is still the early days League One standings.
The likes of Louie Barry, Di’Shon Bernard, Liam Cooper, Billy Mitchell and Joe Lumley are all front-line players who have missed recent outings and Tozer believes that mixed with the introduction of a new coaching staff, play-offs are the ‘absolute minimum’ of what they will or should achieve.
“They’re nine points off top and they’ve got a game in hand,” Tozer told Sky Sports. “That quickly turns to six points and they’re looking at the top two positions, especially with the players they’ve got in there. It’s not a million miles away. I actually thought they were a little lower down the division then they actually are. Play-offs is an absolute minimum and I’d actually say that it’s almost guaranteed that they’ll get in the play-offs.”
