Former Sheffield Wednesday boss lands high-profile international role

Darren Moore led Sheffield Wednesday to promotion from League One in 2023.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has landed a prominent new role.

The 52-year-old, who oversaw 129 Owls matches and achieved a points-per-game ratio of 1.78 on the way to achieving to one of the most dramatic promotion stories in world football, will oversee some of England’s brightest young stars as he takes on the management of England under-20s.

His first matches in charge will come in Euro Elite League games against Italy, France and Germany in the first international window across September and October. Alongside his stint with Wednesday, Moore has managed at senior level with West Brom, Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town and Port Vale, where he achieved League Two promotion in 2025.

“I have huge pride in being appointed as a head coach for England and the honour of representing the country,” Moore said as part of the FA’s official announcement.

“I’m excited to work with some of the best young talent in English football, helping players continue their development and to fulfil their potential. There’s a real emphasis on developing and achieving together as a group. We want to create an environment where talented young players can progress individually while building a strong collective.”

Moore’s rooting came in the highly successful West Brom youth academy where he played a formative role in the development of a swathe of highly successful players. The Star has reason to believe the move has been lined up for some weeks and brings Moore back into management after leaving Vale in December last year.

“It’s an exciting new chapter for me personally,” Moore added. “International football presents a different challenge and an opportunity for me to continue developing and growing as a head coach. I’ve worked with and developed many talented young players throughout my coaching career, so working with elite emerging talent feels like a natural fit.

“I’m just looking forward to getting started, working with the players and staff and contributing to the wider England pathway. There’s something incredibly special about helping talented young players develop while representing your country.”
