'Flexible' opportunities available to Sheffield Wednesday after confirmed loan exit

More Sheffield Wednesday youngsters are expected to head out on loan.

The flexibility of the football set-up available to Sheffield Wednesday will allow them to get some of their youngsters out on loan - with more set to do so in the coming weeks.

Forward Devlan Moses headed out to reunite with former Owls youth coach Jordan Broadbent at National League North side Buxton FC last week and more players who tasted involvement in the senior ranks last season seem set to resume their much-needed development in first team football - away from Hillsborough.

Reece Johnson and Charlie McNeill are already out on loan with Eastleigh and Crewe Alexandra respectively, while goalkeeping prospect Logan Stretch was waiting for Moses at Buxton. The transfer window closed last week but EFL clubs can loan players to non-league sides, with Wednesday having traditionally preferred short-term deals that can be easily extended or rearranged.

Players attached to part-time teams have in the past split their training hours between their loan clubs and time at Middlewood Road. Owls sporting director Simon Wilson will be overseeing the temporary departure of any loan exits and speaking to The Star made clear it is the flexible nature of these loans that makes them especially attractive - and confirmed that they are ‘part of the plan’ in the coming weeks.

“I think it's really important that young players go and get senior football this period,” Wilson said.

“Non-league is actually a fantastic place to loan to because it's a good level of football, certainly in the National League and some of the National League North. It's strong teams, good crowds. We're so unique in this country that you get multiple thousands of people watching games in the fifth and sixth tier. It's pressure. It's men's football. But also you can be flexible with loan situations.

“We can do short-term loans. We can get them back if we need to get them back into our team, which is brilliant because that's what we all want. Or if they need to move to different clubs because that loan isn’t working or there's an opportunity to progress them up the levels, we've got all that. That's 100% part of our plan and probably where my focus goes now.”
