Though he was far from alone, errors from the 25-year-old stopper played some part in all three of the Millers’ goals as his excellent early season form alluded him on a difficult night for the Owls.

Dawson kept four clean sheets in the side’s opening six matches of the season. Wednesday have now lost three consecutive league matches.

Asked whether he was concerned about Dawson’s display, Monk told the BBC: “It’s about what I made of the team’s performance.

"These last two games have been under par from everyone.

“It’s not about any individual, it’s about the collective. These last two games have been under par.”

Monk was left bemoaning the return of individual errors that infected the side’s chances of success throughout last season. There was a lack of cohesion both going forward and in defence on a night that Wednesday failed even to win a corner.

“Mistakes have crept back into our game for whatever reason,” he said. “It’s hard to put your finger on because it’s been a quick change in fortune for us.

“Seven days ago we were in a good position, a good frame of mind, good confidence levels, with everything going right for us. And then within a week, especially these last two games, it’s turned on its head.

“The challenge now is about the character and the understanding of what we need to do in these next three games. It will be a big sign of this group, how far they’ve come and how far they can go.”
