"What the hell's going on here?" Sheffield Wednesday view on Barry Bannan v Ian Evatt fracas
Sheffield Wednesday played out a 1-1 draw with Blackpool on Sunday.
A feisty Hillsborough encounter between Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool saw seven yellow cards and a straight red handed out by referee Simon Mather - but will perhaps be remembered for one unusual flare-up in particular.
Owls skipper Barry Bannan fell into a heated back-and-forth with Tangerines manager Ian Evatt following a run of meaty tackles on the South Stand touchline, with words continuing over several minutes before away substitute Josh Bowler thundered into a session of pushing and shoving with the little Scot.
The former Bolton Wanderers boss seemed to make bizarre gestures towards Bannan and Evatt himself was shown one of those yellow cards for his role in the fracas, which gave Hillsborough a fresh fire to its atmosphere in the final minutes.
Speaking on his reaction to the coming-together, Owls caretaker boss Matt Hamshaw said: “This sounds like Arsene Wenger, but I didn't really see what happened. All I saw was Baz kind of coming across, I'm thinking, what the hell's going on here? And then Ian coming out of his technical area; I loved it, I just loved it. I thought fans then got involved in the game and it fired everybody up. It just shows how much Baz cares.”
Evatt is known as an animated character in his technical area and has been known to find himself at the heart of a back-and-forth on occasion previously. He swapped jibes with Owls coach Andy Holdsworth in moments of the first half and laughed as he was welcomed down the tunnel by home supporters after the final whistle.
Hamshaw, who hopes to stay on at S6 as the hiring of Dave Challinor as Wednesday boss is finalised, grinned when asked what it’s like coming up against Evatt in the technical area: “Look, Ian does his job, I do my job. It's never kind of bothered me what any manager does, it's about us being focused on what we are doing. I felt like we got most things right today. A couple of mistakes have obviously cost us a couple of points and that's the disappointing thing.
“Like I say, it's really hard because I'm sat here like we've won the game, we haven't won the game, so I'm disappointed with that - we should have won the game. But I just think it gives us and the group a lot of belief about what we can be and how we can be. I think a lot of things today weren't football-related, it was more the pride, the passion, the duels and that is what's going to stand this group in good stead moving forward.”
