Sheffield Wednesday await news on another injury suffered against Wigan Athletic

Latest Owls news...

Sheffield Wednesday suffered another injury concern against Wigan Athletic.

The Owls hit the woodwork in the first-half and forced saves but it remained goalless at the break. However, The Latics were the better team after the break and may feel they should have won it.

After a promising first 45 in which Mason Burstow struck the woodwork and Kieran Morrison threatened twice, the hosts were second best after half-time as Wigan hit the post and created other chances. However, despite only taking a point, Wednesday remain top of the league after the first six games of the season.

Wednesday have been hit by several injuries in the early part of the season, with Max Lowe, Sil Swinkels, Jordi Liongola and Louie Barry among those in the treatment room. And they now face a nervous wait over Yan Valery, who came close to scoring twice in the first-half against Wigan, before hobbling off with 30 minutes remaining and being replaced by Liam Palmer.

“I think it was his knee, but I don't know yet,” Henrik Pedersen said when asked about Valery, adding that he was unsure if the defender will have to go for a scan.

Meanwhile, Ricardo Santos, who was back in the starting line-up after missing out a week ago against Peterborough United, came off with 20 minutes left. The powerful centre-back was a man of the match contender before he was replaced by Gabriel Otegbayo. But Pedersen was not as concerned about Santos, who struck up a strong partnership with the excellent Liam Cooper, who was seen carrying the man of the match award after the game.

On Santos, Pedersen told The Star: “It's amazing to have him back. He started to cramp and we needed to change. But there is no injury.”

Wednesday now have a full week to prepare for the visit of Stockport County and they will be hoping that Valery can play a part in that fixture.
