Plenty have still managed to make it
The delays following that crash on the A1 (M) have frustrated many fans. Some turned back and others are ploughing on and hoping to get to see as much of the game as they can.
Some of those who left earlier and managed to avoid the distruption are ready for kick off
First start for Mendez-Laing
After 272 days, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is starting a football match. He last played for Boro in a 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth and now having made a substitute appearance for Wednesday against Wycombe, he’s in the starting XI to take on Sunderland.
He’s one of two changes to the Owls line-up with Chey Dunkley coming in for young Ciaran Brennan as Moore goes for experience at the back. There’s no Josh Windass in the team which is a worry, we’ll find out the reason behind that later.
Turning back
A look on social media suggests that quite a few Wednesday fans have taken a probably wise decision to turn around and head home due to the delays on the motorway. Should have been a sell-out crowd at the Stadium of Light so it’s a shame Wednesday won’t have filled their allocation but obviously, more importantly, our thoughts are with those involved in the incident on the A1(M)
