Sheffield Wednesday are finally back in action tonight for the first time since taking on Crewe on December 11 as the Owls travel to face fellow promotion hopefuls Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The long period with a game due to a Covid outbreak amongst the ranks at Wednesday will surely make it a tough ask for the Owls to get back into their stride against one of the Division’s top sides and it will be interesting to see the line-up that Darren Moore goes for.

We have live updates here throughout the night.

Plenty have still managed to make it

The delays following that crash on the A1 (M) have frustrated many fans. Some turned back and others are ploughing on and hoping to get to see as much of the game as they can.

Some of those who left earlier and managed to avoid the distruption are ready for kick off

Some Sheffield Wednesday fans reaction to the team news

First start for Mendez-Laing

After 272 days, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is starting a football match. He last played for Boro in a 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth and now having made a substitute appearance for Wednesday against Wycombe, he’s in the starting XI to take on Sunderland.

He’s one of two changes to the Owls line-up with Chey Dunkley coming in for young Ciaran Brennan as Moore goes for experience at the back. There’s no Josh Windass in the team which is a worry, we’ll find out the reason behind that later.

A look on social media suggests that quite a few Wednesday fans have taken a probably wise decision to turn around and head home due to the delays on the motorway. Should have been a sell-out crowd at the Stadium of Light so it’s a shame Wednesday won’t have filled their allocation but obviously, more importantly, our thoughts are with those involved in the incident on the A1(M)

Team news is coming up soon

We didn’t get the chance to speak to Darren Moore this week because Wednesday didn’t have a press conference so the line-up will be something of a mystery given it’s been quite a while since they last played.

The teams will be announced at 6.45
