Reports in his native Portugal suggested Carvalhal had agreed a deal to join Red Bull Bragantino last week.

It was claimed the South American side had agreed to pay Carvalhal’s £430,000 compensation package to prise him away from Rio Ave. But a national newspaper in England has said Carvalhal’s switch has been blocked by Rio Ave, who are currently seventh in the Primeira Liga. Carvalhal’s contract with his Portuguese employers runs out at the end of the season.

The charismatic 54-year-old, who led the Owls to back-to-back play-off campaigns in his two full seasons, has previously stated that he wants to return to English football as soon as possible.

Carvalhal left Hillsborough by mutual consent on Christmas Eve in 2017 but soon returned to work at Swansea City.

But Carvalhal was axed following the Swans’ relegation to the Championship.
