The 53-year-old, who left the Latics at the end of last season and revealed last week that initial talks with the Owls had fallen flat, turned down an approach from the club to manage them on a short-term basis, report The Athletic.

The Star columnist Alan Biggs confirmed the report this evening.

Wednesday approached Cook with an offer to take charge until the end of the season, which doesn’t seem to fit the manager’s ideal. It is believed Cardiff City were passed-up on a similar basis.

Cook would be a popular choice when it comes to filling the managerial position, which has been vacant for almost a month since the departure of Tony Pulis.

He has previously enjoyed success with Irish side Sligo Rovers as well as Accrington Stanley, Chesterfield and Portsmouth before he was narrowly relegated with Wigan after an off-field meltdown saw them deducted 12 points.

Cook said last week: “If I can be as honest as I can be with anyone, Sheffield Wednesday supporters, I applied for the job first time around when Tony Pulis took the job and I wasn’t considered, I never got a phone call. That’s football.

“The second time around I deemed that if I didn’t get a phone call first time, I didn’t see the point in applying second time.

“But I have had contact with Sheffield Wednesday, we have spoken. As we speak now those talks aren’t really ongoing.”
