The Star understands that talks between Wednesday and the former Wigan Athletic man did take place, but that no official offer of a job was tabled to him as Dejphon Chansiri continues to weigh up his options.

It is obviously unknown exactly what was discussed during those informal talks, but sources close to the club say that he was never formally interviewed for the position – meanwhile, it was previously reported elsewhere that Cook had recently turned down the vacant position at Cardiff City because he is chasing a longer project.

With that in mind, the same sources also suggested that Wednesday’s conversations with Cook didn’t go any further than preliminary talks, with Chansiri and his advisors seemingly looking at other options elsewhere in their ongoing hunt for Tony Pulis’ S6 replacement.

When current interim, Neil Thompson, was asked about Cook after the loss to Coventry City, he replied, “It’s not something I can comment on or know anything about… Speculation is speculation, it is what it is and it’s always going to happen at football clubs.”

It is thought that – at this point in time – there is no imminent decision on the managerial situation at Hillsborough, however things could be kicked up a gear or two following the defeat at St. Andrews and the fact that there is now just a few days left of the transfer window.

It is now almost a month since the decision to fire Pulis from his role as manager, and the only thing that has become clear at this stage is that Cook is no longer in the running.

As of this evening, ‘Thommo’ has become the outright favourite in the bookies’ list at 5/6, followed closely former Manchester United player, Roy Keane.

Wednesday are back in action on Saturday as they take on Preston North End at Hillsborough, and only Chansiri knows if there will be any movement between now and then.

The Owls are currently second bottom of the table.
