Thompson found out on Tuesday night that he would be in charge of the Owls’ clash with Neil Warnock’s Boro, with the long-time servant of the club being called upon to take over the reins after Tony Pulis was fired by Dejphon Chansiri.

Goals from Callum Paterson and young Wednesdayite, Liam Shaw, secured victory for Wednesday as they ended the year with a win at Hillsborough, with the team showing spirit to hold on after Duncan Watmore had scored a goal early in the second half.

A number of names have been linked with the vacant position at Wednesday since Pulis’ exit, but does Thompson consider himself in the running for the job?

Speaking to the media after the game, Thompson said, “I’ve got to say, I’ve not even thought about it. It’s been that quick over the last 24 hours. We’re back in tomorrow, we’ll get rested up, get prepared, and come back in for Friday…

"I spoke to the Chairman last night, and he said to prepare the team for tonight. As far as I know I’m preparing for Friday, if I’m not then I’m not. We’ll start tomorrow.

"The last 24 hours has just been about trying to get the group right, and I think we did that tonight.”

Next up for Wednesday is a clash with Derby County on Friday night in a game that could potentially see them climb out of the Championship relegation zone.
