Nathaniel Chalobah on trial elsewhere after Sheffield Wednesday door pushed ajar
Sheffield Wednesday manager left the door open for the potential re-signing of an ex-Owls midfielder last week.
Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah has popped up on trial elsewhere having trained with the Owls in recent weeks - and after manager Henrik Pedersen appeared to leave the option of a return to the club on the table.
The one-cap England midfielder, who announced his exit from Hillsborough at the end of last season ahead of the release of the club’s retained list, remains a free agent having joined the camp at St George’s Park earlier this month and playing in two behind-closed-doors friendlies. He did not make the trip to Hungary and Austria last week, unlike uncontracted goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.
Chalobah’s Wednesday career was plagued by injury as he managed only 31 appearances over two years - though nine arrived on the spin towards the end of last season. He showed huge class in that run, often standing out as the best player on the pitch as the crisis-stricken Owls completed a brutal relegation campaign.
Now, according to reports from South London Sport, the London-raised midfielder has appeared down south as a trialist with Championship side Charlton Athletic and played 65 minutes in a 2-0 friendly win at Colchester United. Chalobah initially arrived back to Wednesday on a training brief but appears to have impressed enough to have pushed the door open on a possible return.
“I think he has done a really good job with us,” Owls boss Henrik Pedersen told The Star at their training camp in Budapest last week. “And we are speaking with Nate about the future. So let's see what happens.”
Pressed on the balance between signing a player of Chalobah’s quality with the availability issues that plagued his stint at Hillsborough, Pedersen said: “Nate played the last run of games (last season). Now he has played two games in a row. We are discussing right now what is the next step for the club, and he is one of the players that is interesting to us.”
