Wednesday returned from Luton with a 1-0 victory in an FA Cup third round replay last season courtesy of an Atdhe Nuhiu goal, their first win on the road against the Hatters since March 1989 when a David Hirst effort was good enough to secure all three points for Ron Atkinson’s side in the old Division One.
So, ahead of this evening’s clash against relegation-threatened Luton, we have taken a look back at the Owls side which last won at Kenilworth Road in a league game.
9. Carlton Palmer
Palmer made 18 appearances for England and well over 200 for Wednesday across two spells. In his first stint at Hillsborough he made himself a cult figure among the Owls faithful for his battling displays from midfield. Palmer, who joined the club in 1989 from West Bromwich Albion, missed Wednesday's victory in the 1991 League Cup final due to suspension. He later joined Leeds United for £2.6m in 1994 and went on to appear for Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Coventry City and Stockport County. Palmer also managed Stockport and Mansfield Town after calling time on his playing career. Photo: Peter Tuffrey
10. Steve Whitton
Whitton made just 32 appearances in two years for Wednesday. The London-born striker also played Coventry City, West Ham United, Birmingham City, Ipswich Town and Colchester United - for whom he also managed between 1999-2003. Photo: Jamie McDonald
11. David Hirst
David Hirst's legendary status at Wednesday needs no further documenting. He scored 149 goals in 358 appearances during his 11 years at the club and was capped three times for England, scoring once. Hirst even managed to score and keep a clean sheet in the same match - a 2–0 victory over Manchester City in January 1990 - after he replaced an injured Kevin Pressman in goal. The striker also played for hometown club Barnsley and Southampton. Photo: Shaun Botterill
12. Ron Atkinson
Atkinson managed Wednesday from February 1989 to June 1991. Although the club were relegated to the Second Division in 1990, Atkinson secured promotion back to the First Division the following season. They also won the League Cup that year, beating Manchester United 1–0 at Wembley. Atkinson incurred the wrath of Wednesday fans when he left for Aston Villa in the summer of 1991 - just a week after declaring he would be staying at Hillsborough. He returned to manage the Owls in 1997-98. Atkinson managed a host of other clubs, including West Brom, Manchester United and Coventry City. Photo: Sheffield Newspapers
