The Star reported earlier in the year that 21-year-old Argentine, Manuel Hidalgo, was on the verge of moving up the pecking order for the new season, with the attacker said to have impressed during his time with the U23s.

Now, as confirmed in some images from the club’s return to training, Hidalgo and fellow young forward, Charles Hagan, are training with Monk and his first team as preparations for the upcoming campaign get underway.

Fellow youngsters such as Liam Waldock, Ciaran Brennan and Ben Hughes also remain part of the setup, and the Wednesday faithful will no doubt be looking forward to seeing a more youthful Owls side on the field in the coming months.

Hidalgo was snapped up by SWFC from Triestina in Italy earlier this year, and the Benfica youth product will be looking forward to trying to force his way into Monk’s first team plans for the season ahead.

Hagan, who is still just 18, steps into the senior setup as Monk continues to search for a striker, with Jordan Rhodes still the only recognised number nine on the club’s books at present.

Meanwhile, new coaches, James Beattie, Darryl Flahavan and Andrew Hughes, are all hard at work at Middlewood Road already having joined the club as part of Monk’s technical team for the new season.
