And with relegation to League One confirmed, the club have a number of difficult decisions to make over the future of several players.

Owls boss Darren Moore told reporters on Saturday that he had meetings lined up with the raft of senior players whose contracts are due to come to an end in the next few weeks.

The club’s retained list is expected for release within the next week or so.

But Moore and more to the point owner Dejphon Chansiri are likely to have big decisions to make over a handful of other players, including top scorer Josh Windass.

The 27-year-old scored 10 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions and showed a late-season surge in form that helped keep the Owls in survival contention until the last day of the campaign.

Relegation to the third tier costs a club around £8m, according to football finance experts, and it could well be that clubs come to test the Owls’ resolve on the futures of Windass and other contracted names, including Barry Bannan and Dominic Iorfa.

Windass has one season remaining on his Wednesday contract – though the club may have a year’s extension option. The Star revealed earlier this month that among the clubs to have shown interest are West Brom, Fulham and QPR.

It could mean that Moore and Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri have a dilemma on his hands. Chansiri has drawn criticism throughout his Wednesday reign for holding onto saleable assets for too long.

Fernando Forestieri, Keiren Westwood and Adam Reach are all understood to have been the subject of multi-million pound enquiries at one time or another before their values dwindled. The latter pair could join Forestieri in leaving for nothing this summer.

Depending on what level of interest materialises in Windass, it could be that Chansiri faces a similar quandary in the coming weeks, with Windass’ stock high.

On Monday Windass joined teammates Liam Palmer and Chey Dunkley in posting a message on social media in response to their relegation.

“Difficult weekend. Gutted for the fans also my team-mates,” he wrote on Instagram.

“But the fans have been incredible towards me since I've been here and sorry we couldn't get the job done.

“Thanks for the support and nice messages.”
