Leeds United youngster could be answer to Sheffield Wednesday's wide left problems after international impact

SWFC news...

Two Sheffield Wednesday players have been involved in international football today.

This afternoon Harry Gray started and provided an assist in a 2-1 win for England’s under-19s in a friendly against Norway. Gray started on the left for England and set-up the second goal for Alejandro Gomes Rodriguez on 41 minutes. That came after an opener from Luca Williams-Barnett on 16 minutes. Igor Fabian Gosik pulled a goal back for Norway but England held on. They play again on Friday against USA and then Belgium on Monday.

Gray had been bright for Wednesday in the wide left attacking position before he had to drop out of the side with concussion. He returned before the international break and made a positive impact off the bench. With Louie Barry out injured, Callum Slattery and Jamal Lowe have both been used in the left wing spot, but neither had any success. Gray is the one who has looked the most comfortable and threatening and his assist for England adds weight to the idea that he is the best candidate for the role.

Earlier this morning, Will Grainger started for Wales’ under-19s in a 2-0 friendly defeat against USA in Marbella. Despite being called-up by his country, the 17-year-old was able to play for The Owls in their 2-1 win at Salford City in the EFL Trophy last week. His inclusion at the AIG Stadium was a surprise but because Wales’ clash against USA was still a week away he required no special dispensation from the Welsh FA. Grainger could also feature in two more friendlies against Norway on Friday and Northern Ireland on Monday.

As well as Grainger and Gray, Yan Valery, Kieran Morrison and Sean Fusire have all been away on international duty. Ali Al-Hamadi had to drop out for playing for Iraq because of an ankle injury. Wednesday’s next outing is against Sunderland under-21s at Hillsborough on October 6 before they then visit Huddersfield Town on October 10 as their League one campaign resumes.
