Next week will bring up the year’s anniversary of his last appearance after the former Republic of Ireland international was effectively frozen out under previous boss Garry Monk. Although he has been training with the club’s under-23 side, he hasn’t stepped on a football field since then.

Monk spoke a number of times about the need to transition the changing room to a younger, hungrier model, preferring to pit mid-20s pair Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith against one another for ascendancy in the goalkeeping stakes.

Former senior goalkeeping coach Nicky Weaver, who stepped down to coach the academy when Monk brought in Darryl Flahavan, was seen taking the session with all three stoopers.

Westwood, 36, is approaching the end of his contract this summer. He has made 179 senior appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.
