“It’s a club that you want to help out - regardless of the situation…” – Callum Paterson wasn’t bothered about Sheffield Wednesday’s points deduction

Signing Callum Paterson for a reported £500,000 seems like a real bargain for Sheffield Wednesday, and they’ve certainly landed a player who’s up for a fight this season.

The Owls find themselves in a tough situation as they look to work their way up from a 12-point deduction, but they now find themselves within touching distance of positive points having reduced their deficit to -4.

Garry Monk has put together a team full of character in an attempt to make sure that the deduction doesn’t put the Owls’ Championship future at risk, and Paterson – snapped up from Cardiff City earlier this month – fits the bill perfectly.

Having started both games since his arrival (the 1-1 draw against Queens Park Rangers and 1-0 win over Birmingham City), it seems the Scottish international will have a big role to play going forward – and the 26-year-old is relishing it.

Paterson smiled as he told the media on Saturday night, “It’s a slight inconvenience that we’re a little bit lower down the table, there’s no hiding from that… But this is a massive club, a massive place to be, and it’s a club that you want to help out - regardless of the situation.

“I’m happy I’m here, happy I’ve made the decision, and hopefully we can push on.”

And there does seem to be a growing togetherness amongst the players, a togetherness that seemed to show itself in the fact that so many were there to celebrate Barry Bannan’s goal with him in front of an empty away end at St. Andrews.

Paterson says that they’re a close bunch off the pitch, and want to make sure that fans know that it’s not for show.

“That’s what we’re like behind closed doors,” he explained. “And we want to send a message that we’re like that all the time. It’s good to see, it’s good for everyone to get involved.”

Next up for ‘Pato’ and the Owls is a tough game against Brentford on Wednesday evening, and it’d be the perfect time for the Owls’ new number five to bag his first goal in SWFC colours.
