Injury suffered by young Sheffield Wednesday defender 'not good'
The Owls’ draw at Accrington Stanley was a day to forget for one defender
An injury suffered by a young Sheffield Wednesday defender does not look ‘good.’
Cole McGhee, 20, came on at half-time in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Accrington Stanley but left the pitch five minutes later with his arm in a sling and was replaced by fellow academy prospect Aodhan Sopala.
Left-sided centre-back McGhee made 13 appearances for Wednesday in all competitions last season, including 10 in the Championship. He came on at the break at The Wham stadium in place of Liam Cooper, 34, but his chances of getting some minutes in the bank were scuppered when he suffered a shoulder injury and slowly walked off the pitch looking gutted.
It remains to be seen what part McGhee might play for Wednesday this season, with competition for places at the heart of defence strong with Cooper, Ricardo Santos, Di’shon Bernard, Ernie Weaver, Gabriel Otegbayo and Sil Swinkels, but for now it looks like he will face a spell on the sidelines.
“I don't know the English word for the shoulder going out, I don't know the the consequences for this, but it was not good,” Owls manager Henrik Pedersen told The Star.
After Accrington, another Owls line-up which was more senior, lost 4-0 at Oldham Athletic, which left Pedersen ‘shocked’ and ‘surprised.’
On the two games overall, he added: “I have seen 23, 24 players today, and they all got 90 minutes, and it was very important. And then I have seen a lot of performance, and there was good performance in the other (Accrington) game. Now we'll put everything together, and then we will find a strong start 11 for next Saturday, and then I'm sure we will see the boys back again with our identity for who we want to be.”
Wednesday return to action on Saturday at home to Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup first round.
