Henrik Pedersen and Nathan Jones have say on Sheffield Wednesday's penalty appeal against Charlton Athletic

The Owls had a big claim for a penalty in the first-half of their 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic

Henrik Pedersen was honest enough to admit that the decision not to award Sheffield Wednesday a penalty in their 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic was the correct call.

The Owls’ wait for a home league win goes on after Gabriel Otegbayo cancelled out Matt Godden’s opener in the early second-half. Otegbayo had another chance to win it for the hosts but the points were shared at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The draw is Wednesday’s third on the spin after points against Leicester City and Coventry City and it means they move to minus three with three games remaining.

Pedersen’s side played some neat football in the first-half without forcing any notable saves but Owls fans leapt out of their seats when Tayo Adaramola went over in the box in the first-half. Everyone in the stands was convinced it was a spot-kick but referee Thomas Parsons judged the foul to have taken place outside the area, a decision which was met by loud boos from Wednesdayites.

However, after receiving feedback from his analysts, Pedersen told The Star that it was the right decision. He explained: “I would love to have had a penalty but I don’t think it was a penalty. I think it was just outside.”

And when asked for his view on the decision, Charlton manager, Nathan Jones, agreed and said: "It is a foul but it is just outside the box."

Overall, it was a well-earned for Wednesday and probably a fair result, although both teams may feel they could have won it.

On the performance, Pedersen added: “I think it was the most controlled offensive performance we have had in the season. We knew it would be a very direct game from Charlton with a lot of longer solutions, a lot of second balls, a lot of set-pieces and I think we matched Charlton really well in this part. In the second-half they scored from a second ball put into our box where we did not follow the man. We also scored from a phase like this and I think we competed really well.

“I think offensively, from the beginning, we had too much courage, but that the boys had too much courage in this part of the season makes me proud. And when we lost the ball it was the best ‘rest defence’ we have had in the season. They didn’t have many counters against us. I think it was very deserved that we scored to make it 1-1. Again we were dominant, we wish we could have created a little bit more, but I think it was a strong performance again.”
