Humble Cameron Dawson plays down Sheffield Wednesday penalty heroics

Dawson was back between the sticks for the Owls after spending the latter part of last season on the bench, and he put in an accomplished – if largely uneventful – performance over 90 minutes as Walsall held the Owls to a 0-0 draw.
With the deadlock remaining unbroken, the 25-year-old was called upon for the penalties though, and got down low to his right to save Josh Gordon’s effort before Alfie Bates hit the crossbar and Izzy Brown scored the decisive penalty that saw the Owls progress into the next round.

Hide AdSpeaking after the game, the Wednesday academy graduate discussed the stop, saying, “I don’t think it’ll go down as the greatest save ever… I think I was down there waiting for it. It’s nice to make the save in a shootout and contribute to the win though.
“It’s been a while since the last time I was out there. I’ve been working really hard for a good few months now, trying to make improvements. To come out here today, show what I’ve been working on and put in a positive performance, I’m delighted to be back.”
Meanwhile, the shot-stopper was full of praise for new coach, Darryl Flahavan, saying, “He’s a very good bloke, he’s very detailed in the work we do. When it’s time to work he’s quite intense - that’s what we’re doing, that’s our work.
“I’ve really enjoyed the three weeks I’ve spent with him so far, and hopefully we can continue to make improvements, keep working hard, and go from there.”

Hide AdIt remains to be seen whether Dawson will keep his place against Cardiff City this weekend as he and Joe Wildsmith remain in close competition, but he certainly did his chances no harm with a very solid showing in the West Midlands on Saturday afternoon.
