A whole host of big names left the club last summer for pastures new; to Serie A, to non-league and to Cyprus. Some prospered, some have had a really bad time of it. One has even made a shock return to S6.
Let’s take a look at how they’ve got on since leaving Wednesday..
5. Connor Wickham
Strapping forward Wickham remains at a difficult stage of his career. Injury meant the 28-year-old, since released, played only twice for Crystal Palace u23s this season, though he did manage to get on the bench for the seniors three times in March. He's on the lookout for a new club. Photo: Alex Livesey
6. David Bates
A bizarre loan spell at Wednesday last season saw the Scotland international play only once in an EFL Cup match. He spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Belgian top tier side Cercle Brugge and though injuries did rear their head from time to time, he largely impressed across 21 matches. Photo: KURT DESPLENTER
7. Sam Winnall
His switch to League One Oxford United looked to be heading south for much of the campaign as Winnall struggled with injury, but his return to form and a penchant for scoring important goals from the bench inspired the U's run into the playoffs. They didn't go up, so he may well face off against Wednesday next season. Photo: Alex Burstow
8. Jacob Murphy
His initial weeks at St James Park went very well as he started four consecutive league matches and though the middle period sowed a touch, across the season he claimed three goals and four assists in 31 matches. Became an ever-present towards the back end of the season, impressing while playing every minute of their last eight matches. Photo: Pool
