It was a big night at Hampden Park on Thursday evening as Scotland knocked Israel out of contention for Euro 2020 via a penalty shootout - putting them one step closer to their first major tournament in more than 20 years.

Palmer, sadly, was watching from home after suffering a back spasm in the 1-1 draw with Queens Park Rangers, but Paterson came onto try and force a winner in extra time with the score locked at 0-0.

He wasn’t able to do that, but he did put himself about and made a nuisance of himself - so much so that he picked up a booking - before standing on the halfway line alongside the likes of Andrew Robertson when Kenny McLean slotted home the final penalty.

The Scots, who will be hoping to have Palmer back for the deciding game against Serbia on November 12, now turn their attentions towards facing Slovakia in a UEFA Nations League game on Sunday night - a game in which Paterson will be eager to get more international minutes.

Scotland haven’t qualified for a major tournament since reaching the 1998 World Cup in France, but that could all change next month as Steve Clarke’s side try and overcome one final hurdle in Glasgow in a month’s time.

The pair are Wednesday’s only current international players. Last night former Owls striker Atdhe Nuhiu saw his Euro 2020 hopes end as Kosovo were beaten 2-1 by North Macedonia.
