Reports suggesting the sanction had been reduced from 12 points to six made it onto Twitter shortly after six o’clock on Wednesday evening, prompting feverish speculation on the players’ WhatsApp messaging group.
Calls were made to agents and to senior figures at the club, but it was only when the club released a statement in conjunction with the EFL at 7pm that they were able to enjoy a major boost to their survival chances.

Hide AdOwls midfielder Adam Reach said: “I saw it on Twitter. I don’t even know who at the club knew that it was going to come out.
“It came as a surprise, but a positive surprise. I’m not sure we could have had a heads up because not many people in the club knew it was going to come out, but it’s good news all-round.”
“It’s not amazing news to talk about because a points deduction is still a points deduction even though it’s gone from 12 to six," he continued, “but I think when you’re in our position, we’ll take any bit of good news and any bit of good luck that we can to try to get the ball rolling and to get the positivity back in the group.
“We all had a little laugh and a joke about it, we enjoyed it and we’ve used it now as motivation and inspiration to get going again.”
