A thrilling game low on quality saw Wednesday go 3-2 up midway through the second half and with Cardiff having secured a late equaliser against Rotherham, the Owls were in the safety spots for only the second time this season.

But it was only for a matter of seconds as Rams forward Martyn Waghorn stroked home a penalty to bring the home side level and seal safety for Derby.

The result left Wednesday bottom of the Championship, with Wycombe Wanderers and Rotherham United down with them.

After his first game back from illness, Moore attempted to convey the feeling in the changing room.

“We’re obviously disappointed for everyone connected with the football club,” he said. “It’s something that is really hard to take and the players all feel very low.

“I asked them to come here and leave everything on the pitch and they left everything on the pitch. It was a pulsating game, it ebbed and flowed either way and when you take in the emotion they gave out there, they gave everything.

“It just wasn’t quite enough in the end and now we have to face the reality of what it is.”

When the dust has settled attention will soon turn to what’s next for Wednesday. But there will be little rest for Moore.

He said: “Tomorrow morning when I wake up I’ve got a different head on me in terms of moving this place forward.”
