The long-serving midfielder, who has played 216 times in all competitions since joining the Hillsborough club in 2012, is out of contract after the Boro clash having already extended in order to finish the season.

Lee was the first Owls player to confirm his intention to stay at the club but has missed the last four matches with fatigue, his last game coming at Swansea on July 5.

The former Oldham man has had a number of injury problems in recent seasons but has been more involved this campaign than in any of his previous three, taking the field 27 times. An uptick in form before his absence prompted debate over whether he should be given a further year at the club.

Asked why he was left at home for Wednesday’s trip to Fulham, Monk said: “This weekend came a little bit too soon, but we’re hopeful, he trained over the weekend and we’re going off his own symptoms.

“If he can come through fine and he has no reaction then he should be available for Wednesday’s game.”

There is little clarity over whether Lee is likely to be awarded a new deal. Speaking to The Star, Monk made clear that no decisions have been made over the futures of his soon-to-be out-of-contract players, with forward Atdhe Nuhiu in a similar situation.
