The Owls head into their final game of the 2019/20 season against Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening and just two days out from the clash remain unsure whether they do so in a relegation fight or not.

Defeat at Fulham and results beneath them in the table mean they are now just eight points from safety. The charge, which centres on the circumstances around the sale of their Hillsborough stadium, could see them slapped with a hefty points deduction and threatens them with relegation to League One.

A three-man independent panel has heard the case and it is understood that the EFL are waiting on the verdict. No reason has been given for the delay.

The saga has stretched on since November last year when the charges were originally brought to the club. Representatives of several clubs, most notably Barnsley, have spoken about the unsettling nature of the delay and speaking last week Owls boss Garry Monk admitted the situation was a source of frustration.

“I can't control any of it and none of us can. I just have to try to set the team up to win games,” Monk said.

“From a logic point of view it makes no sense that it's gone on this long. It's not a good situation for anyone to be in.

“It's frustrating but the club are dealing with it.

“Regardless of any EFL situation, we need results.”
