The Owls are looking for their third manager this season after sacking Tony Pulis just 45 days after he replaced Garry Monk in the Hillsborough hotseat.

Pulis is believed to have fallen out with owner Dejphon Chansiri over transfers and budgets, as well as picking up just seven points from 10 games since replacing Garry Monk.

It leaves Wednesday second-bottom of the Championship table, having also been docked six points this season by the EFL after being found guilty of financial irregularities.

They are in real danger of sliding back into League One, and will need to appoint a manager quickly if they are to make the most of the January transfer window.

Wednesday desperately need to strengthen in several areas, with a forward one of the main priorites, having scored just 12 league goals this season.

There are other issues, including the likes of Barry Bannan being out of contract at the end of the season, and a dispute between Pulis and Chansiri over the make-up of the squad and the budget the Owls need has been reported by a number of sources, including Sky Sports, as being a reason behind the Welshman's exit.

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling, who has worked with Pulis on Soccer Saturday, claimed there must have been some ‘home truths’ between the two men.

Poyet has been out of work for two years since leaving Bordeaux, but is the favourite with bookies ahead of the likes of former Wednesday favourites Nigel Pearson and Ryan Lowe.

Former Barnsley boss Jose Morais remains high in the betting, along with ex-Championship managers Paul Cook and Danny Cowley who are also out of work.

Poyet, however, is the clear frontrunner at the moment. The former Chelsea and Spurs star held talks with his former club Sunderland last month after the Black Cats sacked Phil Parkinson, before deciding he didn't want to return to the Stadium of Light while they were a League One club.
