Hide AdThe Windass deal was said to have been delayed by the fact that Wednesday were dealing with receivers controlling Wigan’s finances. His signing is expected to be announced in the hours after the club unveiled the shock free transfer signing of former Huddersfield Town attacker Elias Kachunga.
The Germany-born DR Congo man, who was a key player in Town’s historic promotion campaign in 2017 and during their two seasons in the Premier League, can play wither out wide or as a central striker and brings with him experience at the highest level.
Alongside Kachunga, the signing will add much-needed firepower to a squad that throughout the summer had only Jordan Rhodes as a forward option after the departures of Steven Fletcher, Fernando Forestieri, Sam Winnall and Atdhe Nuhiu on free transfers.
Windass’ transfer fee has been reported to be somewhere in the region of the £500,000 the Latics still owe Rangers for his £2.5m transfer back in 2018 and reunites Windass with the club he spent the second half of last season with.

Barring any last-minute issues, Windass will become the club’s fifth summer signing after the additions of Kachunga, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Chey Dunkley and loanee Izzy Brown.
Windass, who is fit having been training alone at a sports facility close to his home in West Yorkshire, could go straight into contention to play in Saturday’s curtain-raising Carabao Cup clash at Walsall.
