Ex-England international Viv Anderson on Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and their ‘precarious position’

Viv Anderson played over 400 games for Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest combined during his career, and while it’s ‘a bit too early’ to talk relegation, he admits they need points – and quickly.

Anderson, a former England international and a European Cup winner with Forest, spent a couple of seasons with the Owls in the early 1990s, and sees both of his former clubs languishing at the foot of the Championship table as things stand.

Speaking to The Star ahead of today’s encounter at the City Ground, Anderson explained that the two clubs are facing a similiar problem – they can’t score.

He said, “It’s a precarious position both my clubs are in, and I’ve followed Forest for Sky over the last two months - I’ve done their games live - and they struggle to score goals even though Lyle Taylor’s got four, I think. He’s a bit isolated, and they need to get more people around him.

Tony Pulis is still trying to find his strongest team, and they need to start winning.

“For Wednesday they need to get something from the game - whether it’s one or three - it’d be good for them. For Forest, they need to win.”

But it’s not just up front that is the problem, he says. Today’s opponents for the Owls have just two clean sheets since mid-October.

He added, “All successful teams are built on clean sheets, and Forest can’t seem to get one at the moment. And if you can’t keep clean sheets and your’e not scoring goals, then you’re going to lose.

“It’s a bit too early to say either of those two teams are going to go down, because there are a lot of games to play, but both need to start getting points. Over this Christmas period they both have to put a run together to get them out of this.”

The two sides go into this game in poor form – Wednesday without a win in eight and Forest without a win in seven – and with relegation certainly becoming a possibility for the two former Premier League clubs, tonight’s encounter has become a bit of a must-win game for both of them.
