Discussions held over loan outgoings for youngsters at Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls boss said early last month that the club have fielded several calls from lower league outfits as to whether their younger players may be available, but made clear that while he appreciated that several of them would benefit from regular first team football elsewhere, the make-up of the squad was on a ‘needs must’ basis.

The likes of Ciaran Brennan, Liam Waldock, Charles Hagan and Conor Grant were drafted in for involvement in the Owls’ Carabao Cup run alongside fledgling first team squad members Alex Hunt and Liam Shaw.

Speaking to The Star yesterday, Monk said that he has held conversations with the club over the best steps for those players as the domestic transfer deadline edges closer but that his main focus has been on a manic start to the season.

Loan deals between EFL clubs must be complete by October 16.

“If I’m honest, I’ve just been so focused on incomings and these games,” he said. “We’ve had so many games in such a short period of time, there’s not been a lot of time to breathe, really.

“I’m focused on the game this weekend and that’s where all my energy has been.

“Outside of that, of course I’ve had talks and discussions, but that’s really for the club to decide. I’ve given my views on what I think should happen and what I think is best for a young player or whoever it is.

“It’s for the club to decide if they want to do that or not. I can only advise in those situations as to what is best, I’ve given them that while trying to prepare for games. We’ll see what comes of that.”

Speaking last month the Owls boss said of players that would benefit from time away: “Regardless of what the squad looks like, a lot of the young lads will be in the first team this season, but I’m talking about the ones who are coming up behind that.

“Ideally there would be loans, but we’ll keep looking at it, we’ll get them on the pitch and keep developing them.”
