Dejphon Chansiri spells out ambitious target for Garry Monk and Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls had their 12 point deduction halved by an independent disciplinary panel yesterday but are still at the foot of the table on five points.

Garry Monk has forged on with a transition that has seen a huge turnover of players in recent months, but the ultimate aim remains the same as far as Chansiri is concerned; promotion to the Premier League.

“We need to gel the team,” he said. “But as a professional I don’t think they need too much time to gel the team. The problem is inconsistency.

“It doesn’t mean that because we have new players that we need time, so we don’t expect to go up or get to the playoffs. We still expect this.

“Otherwise, why do we need to recruit many players? I can waste my money better if we don’t expect to go up.”

A midweek win over high-flying Bournemouth saw Wednesday record their first home win of the season, with the mood shifting at Hillsborough with news of the points deduction.

On the effect the points deduction has had on their ambitions, the Owls chairman said: “I accept that if we have deducted points it is more difficult. My expectation is to get to the playoffs, to get there it would normally be 90 points. Minimum I expect to get playoffs.

“It is still early, we only played 10 games. Maybe this year we can get sixth position.

“At this moment we will wait until after January and then we can predict. We will try as much as we can to get to the playoffs. If we didn’t have a deduction we would aim to be going up, otherwise there is no point in wasting money.”

Garry Monk, under fire from some quarters of the fanbase, is the latest man charged with a long-awaited return to the top tier.

Chansiri said he was in no doubt over his ambition.

“Every coach in my time here, the target has been to go up. Not the playoffs.

“When they speak to me, the talk is to go up, that the squad is good enough to go up.”
