Dejphon Chansiri slams Steve Bruce 'lie' and says he didn't want him at Sheffield Wednesday in the first place

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri has claimed Steve Bruce LIED when he left to join Newcastle United last year.

Bruce quit his role at Hillsborough after just six months in charge – infuriating the Owls’ hierarchy in the process.

The 59-year-old resigned as Owls boss before being announced as Rafa Benitez’s successor 48 hours later, taking assistants Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence with him.

At the time, Wednesday made their feelings known via a club statement, stating they were “considering its position and taking the appropriate legal advice.”

They also went on to report Newcastle to the Premier League for their conduct during the appointment of Bruce.

Mike Ashley was forced to pay compensation for the former Manchester United defender, which Chansiri revealed has been paid in an extraordinary interview this morning.

“I told him since the beginning, that things should be straight forward. If he wanted to leave or I wanted him to leave, we would talk about.

“I’m just disappointed that he didn’t tell me the truth. If he’d told me the truth I would’ve supported him, why was the need to lie?”

Bruce was named as Owls manager in January 2019, but didn’t take charge until February.

Chansiri continued, atonishingly claiming he did not want to appoint Bruce in the first place.

“He wanted to come. I told him ‘I don’t like your style’, you can’t finish my job. He said he was good enough.

“I gave him the chance. If he hadn’t come to see me then he wouldn’t have the chance to come here.

“He went to Newcastle because of us. If he didn’t come to Wednesday then he wouldn’t have gone to Newcastle.

“Because he came to see me, that’s why he got the job! That’s a fact and he cannot say anything to that. You can ask him.”
