David Storch describes Sheffield Wednesday transfer position as rebuild continues

Sheffield Wednesday chairman David Storch has released his latest update statement to supporters.

Aspects of the current transfer landscape at Sheffield Wednesday have been confirmed by club chairman David Storch as the Owls continue to move forward with their squad rebuild in what has already been a manic summer of activity.

Wednesday have added nine new faces to their squad with three senior figures heading the other way. Discussions continue to take place behind the scenes with regard to the addition of further players - though all deals must fall in line with a business plan framework as agreed with the EFL as part of the takeover of the club by US consortium Arise and its exit from administration with no points deduction.

Though inevitably unable to go into finite detail, in a statement released on Friday Storch touches on the parameters Wednesday are working under, confirming the existence of the previously reported transfer limit. Storch also confirms that that while funds received from player sales can be reinvested into the squad rebuild in terms of wage payments, they do not raise the transfer spend limit as agreed with the EFL. As previously reported, the club’s owners are unable to inject their own funds into the football budget.

With a number of permanent and loan deals done already, it is understood that Wednesday are operating somewhere towards to the agreed transfer spend limit, which is believed to include loan fees and future payments included in permanent deals. There are many ways a club can go about their business; in theory loan deals can be structured in order to pay a higher wage percentage for players, for example, in doing so easing loan fee commitments.

Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen confirmed to media from the club’s training camp in Hungary that the club’s recruitment team are operating from a shortlist of potential incomings in key positions and outlined the need for further attacking reinforcements. Aston Villa youngster Tommi O’Reilly is known to be a player Wednesday have held talks over, while midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah is a free agent option having impressed while training with the club in recent weeks. A range of further potential deals are being explored.

In a fulsome 443-word statement, Storch also touches on the whirlwind first few weeks of the Arise ownership and ‘rebirth’ effort.

Storch’s full statement reads as follows:

Hey SWFC family,

It’s hard to believe it’s less than 85 days since we officially began our stewardship of this incredible football club. A lot has happened in a short space of time. First, thank you for your support, passion, patience and belief.

The energy around Sheffield Wednesday is real, and every week I spend in Sheffield – and around our team, as I have this week in Europe – strengthens my belief in what this club can become. We are making progress, on and off the pitch.

Our players are training hard and preparing hard for the new season. We’ve added exciting new signings, retained important talent and secured the long-term futures of young players. Building a team for today matters, but building a team for tomorrow matters just as much.

We are also investing heavily in the people around the club. David Bruce is building an outstanding leadership team with clear strategy, structure and alignment, and I continue to be hugely encouraged by the quality of people joining Sheffield Wednesday.

Beyond the first team, we’re investing significantly in the training ground, improving infrastructure and upgrading supporter experiences at Hillsborough. We’ve welcomed Umbro back, begun work on new premium spaces and are developing new partnerships to improve the in-stadium fan experience. We are also reconnecting with club legends and people who helped build Wednesday’s history. That matters deeply to me. A club like Sheffield Wednesday should honour its past while building its future.

I also want to speak openly about our current operating environment. Following administration, we are operating within an agreed financial framework with the EFL for the next two seasons. We are aligned with that approach and believe sustainable, disciplined decision-making is the right foundation for the club’s long-term success.

This includes a league-approved operating budget, no ownership equity funding and a defined transfer fee budget. Although player sales can be reinvested across our wider football operation, including player wages, they do not increase the agreed transfer fee budget.

I share this not as an excuse, but because I believe in transparency. The reality is we are rebuilding, which makes smart leadership and long-term thinking even more important. But let me be clear – these constraints do not change our ambition. Not one bit. Michael, Tom and I remain fully committed to building a successful, sustainable Sheffield Wednesday that competes at the highest possible level and makes this city proud.

Not every improvement will be immediately visible, but important work is happening every single day. We are building. We are investing. We are moving forward. And we are doing it for you. This is your club.

All the best,

David
