A number of big names in the squad are approaching the end of their contract and though it has been confirmed that the Owls have offered extensions to the likes of Barry Bannan, Adam Reach and Tom Lees, as well as initial talks with youngster Liam Shaw, question marks remain over a number of others.

One first team man whose future is still in question is Dutch midfielder Joey Pelupessy.

The 27-year-old signed a one-year extension to his deal in the summer while under Garry Monk, taking his Hillsborough stay past the two-year mark.

Maligned by many Owls supporters, Pelupessy has produced a handful of encouraging performances in the absence of Massimo Luongo under new boss Tony Pulis.

Speaking after Saturday’s win over Coventry in which Pelupessy won plaudits for a committed display, Pulis said: “He was exceptional.

“What he lacks in ability and everything else, he makes up for with effort and commitment. He has got a heart the size of a lion and he is a really good kid around the place.”

Pulis has made clear his want to add depth to a stretched squad in the coming weeks but either from the bench or starting, Pelupessy has played in all but one of his new manager’s 10 matches in charge and hinted earlier this year that he would like to extend his stay beyond this season.

The Dutchman said: “I am happy of course that I can stay one more year but if it goes well and the club are still happy with me and the manager and I am happy then of course you hope to stay longer.

“I think in these times you have to be happy with one more year extra. Let's see what the future brings.

“At the moment, I am really happy so hopefully I can stay for a long time.”

Pelupessy signed by Jos Luhukay from Dutch side Heracles in January 2018 and has played in 83 league matches for Wednesday, scoring one league goal.
