Captain Barry Bannan’s penalty early in the second half after fellow Scotsman Callum Paterson had been fouled by Adam Clayton was enough to secure all three points for the Owls on Garry Monk’s return to one of his former clubs.

The win means Wednesday are now on minus four points at the foot of the table, but just seven shy of Derby County in 21st place.

Writing on Twitter after the win, our Owls correspondent Joe Crann posted: “Lots of good performances today. Loads of commitment and spirit - Luongo excellent in an unfamiliar position, one of Reach’s best performances in a long while. Odubajo good too. Can’t fault anybody, really.”

Relieved Wednesday fans were in jubilant mood and also took to Twitter to celebrate victory in the second city.

Here’s what a selection of Wednesdayites had to say after the game.

@owl4life1867 Battled hard and got the win we deserved over 90 minutes but Christ we make hard work of it don’t we?! Got to kill teams off when we’re on top. Too many times we’ve been punished at the end and very nearly happened again today. Anyway, can enjoy the weekend now! #swfc -4

@MattSummerhill I think Aden Flint likes heading footballs more than I like eating pie and chips #swfc

@DavidMarshman2 Decent performance again, bit nervy at the end but held on this time so signs of improvement. Need to work on killing teams off but can see clear progress #swfc

@Christoph0512 The thing I liked today is that it was a proper flexible, modern system. Good structure off the ball but very fluid on it and full of energy. Long way to go but these signs been a long time coming. #swfc

@owls_4life What a block by Van Aken btw. Credit where credit due. Got to be in line for most improved player so far. #swfc

@Sam_Boldan Credit where credit’s due with Van Aken, proven me wrong to put in a solid performance #swfc

@ManhattanOwl Another solid performance - almost unnerving watching a balanced side with fight in them. Got to call out Luongo, but also JVA. Who knew we’d be lauding him two months ago? Like that Marriott can cleanly strike a ball too. Little things. Big win. #swfc

@CarlosShires Trying not to get to carried away (early days). But now @GarryMonk has got his own staff and is bringing in his own players you can definitely see 100% togetherness. Keep up the good work.

@YICETOR Got to be proud of the #swfc team. They're digging in and getting the results. Fair play to Garry Monk too. Made some decent transfers under difficult circumstances. Wish we were there to cheer them on.

@WillQuince1 If we do win our appeal on this points deduction we have had a very decent start and a good squad has been built you just never know #swfc
