Chris Waddle's advice to new Sheffield Wednesday striker after Leeds United move

Harry Gray joined The Owls on loan from Leeds United earlier this month

Harry Gray has been offered some simple advice for his upcoming season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

The striker, 17, has joined The Owls for the 2026/2027 campaign from Leeds United. Wednesday fought off strong competition for his signature, who is highly-rated by everyone at Elland Road and at England youth level.

The forward scored three goals in 20 appearances for a struggling Rotherham United in League One last season but Gray came out of his time at Millers having made a positive impression.

There will be pressure and high expectations at Hillsborough next term- a lot for anyone to deal with never mind a teenager - but Owls favourite Chris Waddle just wants to see him play with a smile on his face.

“Enjoy it,” Waddle told The Star, via Freebets.com, when asked what advice he would give Gray. “Wednesday have great fans, I had a great relationship with them. They like skill, they like creativity, they like players with imagination. I saw him play for Rotherham last year — he was in a team that was struggling and probably lost a bit of confidence.

“If he comes out the blocks with Barry Bannan around him giving him experience and pointing him in the right direction, we know he's got a lot of talent. The main thing at that age is to go there and enjoy it. Turning out in front of 30,000 fans — amazing."

Gray signed in time to train with his new team-mates at St George’s Park earlier this month and there will be more bonding opportunities when he flys out to Budapest and then Vienna with the squad next week.

Speaking about why he chose Wednesday over other clubs, Gray explained: “There were quite a few clubs interested but it was an easy decision because this is such a big club. It’s crazy to think about 24,000 season tickets in League One and the timing is perfect, as I have a full pre-season to settle in.

“Hillsborough is a special stadium when the fans get going and I think this year, with everything that's going on around the place, it should be unbelievable and hopefully a season to remember. It’s the perfect place for me.”
