‘Hoping’ - Sheffield Wednesday hero Carlton Palmer makes surprising Sheffield United and Chris Wilder claim

Carlton Palmer has reacted to Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation and shared his hopes for the future

Former Sheffield Wednesday star Carlton Palmer has surprisingly claimed that he’d like to see Sheffield United and Chris Wilder win promotion this season.

The comments came after the Owls relegation to the third-tier of English football was mathematically confirmed on Sunday, following a narrow 2-1 defeat against the Blades at Bramall Lane.

It marked the earliest relegation in Football League history and the latest dark chapter in a challenging period for a club that has experienced a huge drop off since of the 1990s when the club recorded successive third place finishes in the top-flight while also winning the League Cup in 1991 while reaching the final of both cup competitions just two years later.

Palmer, who was a stalwart in the glory years from 1989 to 1994, shared his thoughts on Wednesday’s painful season.

The 18-time England international posted on X: “Sad day yesterday being an Owls fan. The youngsters have given there all for the manager and acted with dignity.

“Hoping United and Chris get promoted. Great for Sheffield and praying for good new owners for our club.”

Palmer’s wish for a Blades promotion came as something of a surprise to a number of Owls supporters, given his strong affiliation with the Blues and White side of the city.

One supporter was quick to disagree with the Wednesday hero, saying that he genuinely hopes the Blades avoid promotion to the Premier League.

As for Wednesday they remain on -7 points with 13 games to spare. They’ve won one league match all season and have only managed to score twice since New Year's Day throughout all competitions after a series of challenging results.

Wednesday face Norwich City in their next match in midweek. Meanwhile, United, who are now six points away from the top six, play host to league leaders Coventry City in an extremely important game at the top of the Championship table.
