Barry Bannan reveals why Sheffield Wednesday deal was double boost - and what Josh Windass made of it
The late, late addition of Davis Keillor-Dunn served as the final act of Sheffield Wednesday’s busy summer.
Sheffield Wednesday players rueing injury to star man Louie Barry last week were given an almost instant boost when they were told of an incoming addition - with reference from a familiar face only serving to increase the mood.
The Owls moved late to secure the loan addition of Davis Keillor-Dunn from Wrexham after a ‘unique opportunity’ to complete the deal arose on deadline day - and in the hours after the Welsh side had completed the transfer of Calum O’Hare from Sheffield United.
It all unfolded on the evening Wednesday beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 at Adams Park and came as a happy boost to Owls figures leaving the pitch after a gruelling encounter - not least as they had lost in-form goal-getter Louie Barry to what would later be confirmed as a medium-term injury.
“As soon as I came off at Wycombe I was told that we’d signed him,” vice-captain Barry Bannan told The Star following the weekend’s win over Peterborough United that took the new-look Owls to the top of the table.
“That was amazing because none of us thought there would be much more coming in. It was well-timed too because we’d obviously just lost Louie Barry that night and that was a big blow to us because he’d started the season really well.
“To find out you’ve got Davis coming in, proven at the level, has scored lots of goals the same as Louie, that helped us in a big way. Having lost Louie to injury, in terms of scoring goals and that bit in front of goal not having another one in. Especially further down the line with injuries. It’s healthy up there at the minute.”
The parent club status of Keillor-Dunn, who went on to make his Wednesday debut in the win at London Road, meant Bannan didn’t have to search far for a reference.
“It’s a great signing,” the Scot grinned. “I spoke to Josh Windass about him and he spoke highly of him - if Josh is speaking highly of someone, they must be quite good!”
