Sheffield Wednesday’s squad rebuild has been ticking over nicely this summer but there is still work to do.
The Owls have brought in nine new signings as they aim to bounce back to the Championship at the first attempt. They kick-off the League One season away at Leyton Orient on Saturday, August 15.
Barry Bannan has spoken openly about Wednesday’s ambitions for the upcoming campaign, stating that they want to win the title. If they are to achieve that, they will need more strength in depth, particularly out wide and up front.
A statement released on Friday by David Storch explained Wednesday’s transfer position, as agreed with the EFL, any player sales they receive cannot increase their budget to buy players but the funds can go towards wages. With that in mind, they will likely have to dip into the free agent market to strengthen their ranks.
Here, we look at some free agent attacking options who are still available...

1. Sammy Silvera
The 25-year-old Aussie winger is available after being released by Middlesbrough. He made 65 appearances in total, including 23 in the Championship last season, after joining from Central Coast Mariners in 2023. He started last season in the Boro line-up before injury struck. 2. Ross Stewart
The Scotland-capped striker, 30, commanded a reported fee of above £8m when he moved from Sunderland to Southampton in 2023. He's scored goals wherever he has been but injuries hampered him at Saints. Stewart was at Sunderland when David Bruce was there so there is a link. | Getty Images

3. Marcus Forss
The Finland international striker is another who is looking for a new club after leaving Boro. The 27-year-old ex-Brentford man scored five goals in 27 appearances on loan at Bolton last season in League One before suffering a serious hamstring injury in January, which he has now recovered from. 4. Elijah Adebayo
The 27-year-old scored 10 goals in 27 Premier League appearances for Luton Town just two seasons ago but has had injury problems since then. A cruciate ligament sustained in April 2025 kept him out of action until March this year. A hip problem on his return then ruled him out for the last part of the season. He spent five years at The Hatters, scoring 47 times in 184 outings, but is now a free agent. If he can shrug off the injuries, he would be a useful weapon in League One.
