Blessin emerged as a candidate to succeed Chris Wilder in South Yorkshire after transforming KV Oostende’s fortunes in the Belgian top flight this season, but appears unlikely to be granted the necessary Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) required to manage in England if he is indeed approached by the United hierarchy.

Jokanović appears to be the overwhelming fans’ favourite to succeed Wilder, giving his experience of managing in England and success with both Watford and Fulham, and has been backed into favourite at some bookmakers to be United’s first permanent foreign manager.

But, despite the Serb managing Qatari side Al-Gharafa in 2019, he would qualify for a GBE based on his 34-month spell at Fulham.

As well as fulfilling criteria including the possession of a UEFA pro licence or equivalent, managers seeking to be granted a GBE must have managed in ‘a top league the prescribed time’.

In English, managers must have had overall responsibility of a club in a ‘top league’ for either 36 months in total, or 24 months consecutively.

So whereas Blessin appears to fall foul of the requirements because he has less than a year’s senior managerial experience on his CV, Jokanović’s time at Fulham would appear to make him eligible... if, of course, United do look to appoint him this summer in their bid to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
