Why Sheffield United should relish, not fear, Wolves test as new boy Jordan Ayew handed debut boost
Chris Wilder wants Sheffield United to embrace Sunday’s test against Wolverhampton Wanderers, while new signing Jordan Ayew has been confirmed as available to make his debut at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United should relish rather than fear Sunday’s enticing clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Bramall Lane, Chris Wilder believes, as the Blades gear up for their sternest test of the season so far. Wolves were relegated last season but are amongst the favourites to go straight back up.
United have had a solid start to the new season themselves, losing only once and beating Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night. But they will need to be better than they have been so far against one of the Championship’s fancied teams.
César Peixoto’s squad which travels north will be backed with top-flight quality and experience, with United at a different stage of their journey. But United have matchwinners in their squad too, with in-form Tom Cannon admitting that he wouldn’t swap any of his teammates for any other player in the division.
“It’s a game that we shouldn’t be fearing,” Wilder said. “We should be really looking forward to, enjoying it. A challenge of playing against a lot of players that have played in the Premier League.
“It's not a team that's been up and down and up and down. They've had a lengthy period in that division, and they've had all the advantages of staying in the Premier League for nine or ten years.
“They had a difficult season last season and like all of the relegated teams in the division, the aim will be to go straight back up. So it will be a big challenge for the players, but one the players are really looking forward to, from looking at them over the last couple of days and looking forward to Sunday.”
New boy Jordan Ayew will be involved again after signing on the eve of the midweek trip to Blackburn, which he watched from the bench as an unused substitute. Asked if the Ghanian international is in a place where he could feature against Wolves, Wilder said: “Yes, 100 per cent.
“One of the attractions of signing Jordan is the level that he's played at for the majority of his career,” Wilder said. “It was only a couple of months ago he was captain of his country in the World Cup against England. He’s got 100-plus caps, and his availability record is just incredible.
“So he's a top pro, he's looked after himself in the summer and we're delighted with where he's at physically. He'll definitely be involved.”
United were searching for another attacking option after selling Callum O’Hare to Coventry City on deadline day, and signed Ayew - who turned 35 today [Friday] - on a one-year deal after he left Leicester City in the summer.
“We're not teaching him how to play a position,” Wilder added. “If he plays up front in a two, he'll do that. If he has to play as a 10, he'll do that. If he has to play off the side, he'll do that because he's done that all his career in the Premier League.
“He's not lost his hunger, he's not lost his desire. He's kept himself in incredible shape and I'm looking forward to working with him. And he's looking forward to playing for our football club.”
