Sheffield United’s first this summer is even more difficult than usual.

Chris Wilder sent out a strong side to take on a young Dundee United outfit as part of the Blades’ preparations ahead of the new Premier League season, but he’ll arguably have learned very little from this one after Storm Francis forced the abandonment of the match at Tannadice.

Wind howled around the ground and the heavy rain settled on the pitch, making it very difficult for United’s players to get into their usual passing rhythm for long periods.

As a result, it was decided by all parties to call the match to a halt at half time with United leading 1-0 thanks to Billy Sharp’s goal just before that whistle which would signal the end.

So who stood out?

Super Sander

Sander Berge was the top performer in the red and white shirt. After five minutes a great run through the middle saw him tripped in the box, leading to a penalty with which Billy Sharp struck the post and that would be a theme for the rest of the match. He was comfortable on the ball and always looked to take players on. We’re still yet to see the best of Berge after his big-money move but this gave Blades fans reason to be hopeful.

Bash picks up where he left off

It took just 49 seconds for Chris Basham to make one of those unpredictable, marauding runs from the back and cause the Dundee United midfield and defence problems. He was solid at the back, too, as usual and showed that he’s lost none of his desire to get forward.

Both Robinsons show promise

The Robinsons at either end of the pitch showed up well – Jack at the back was solid and looked more and more comfortable pushing up which was a bit of a struggle at time when he deputised for Jack O’Connell when football made a return post-lockdown. At the other end, Callum was a handful throughout, showed great close control and was unfortunate not to have got on the scoresheet. Will be interesting to see where his future lies.

With no George Baldock, Regan Slater was gven the opportunity to show what he’s capable off but in an unfamiliar role at right wing-back. He didn’t let his boss down, turning in a fine performance and one particular cross which Billy Sharp headed just wide was superb.
